Pretty sure I was a serial killer in my past life.
Because karma is kicking my ass in this one.
Everything was copasetic. I was coasting on the wave of life… until a gnarly swell pulled me under, and I washed ashore to a nightmare. A nightmare there was no waking from.
So I packed my shit and moved all the way to the other side of the country—to the only place someone was willing to give me a second chance.
I came to swim, and though I’m on the team, I don’t want to be Elite. These bros are exactly like the ones I left behind, and I’m not stupid enough to get betrayed again.
But then karma shows up and laughs right in my face.
I slept with my coach’s daughter.
Because of course I fucking did.
And though she calls to me like a siren, that night was just a distraction. A one-time thing.
Until she shows up at Daddy’s pool as the assistant coach. Now the very girl I can’t get off my mind is the one just declared off-limits.
Naturally, my heart decides it can’t beat without her jade stare, sassy mouth, and car that cruises so slow it uses a calendar as a speedometer.
Now I’m at the top of Coach’s shit list, and everything I left in Cali comes knocking at my door. With Landry’s safety on the line, I won’t just roll over and take it. This time, I’ll put up a fight.
There’s no telling what I’ll do or how far I’ll go to make sure Landry isn’t punished for standing by my side. When things get dangerous, I know this wildcard can’t play this game alone.
Because even if trusting people doesn’t come easy… loving her does.

Rating: 5 Groupie Stars
Wildcard by Cambria Hebert is the 5th book in her Westbrook Elite series. Yes, you could read this as a standalone but honestly, it's so much better when you know what is going on and who all of the characters are. Trust me and start from the beginning. It's worth it!
Wildcard is about Jason Rush, who joined the swimteam at the same time as Lars from WTF, who is also his roommate. Rush is known as the wildcard (for more than one reason) and he has a bit of an attitude. But once we hear more about his story the reader finds out why, and man is it a doozy.
Still reeling from his departure from California, Rush finds his way to the natatorium while visiting his new college. A little meditation at the bottom of the pool brings him face to face with a gorgeous siren, which eventually leads to an anonymous hot and spicy one-time encounter in the locker room. *fans myself*
Landry Resch is the new assistant coach for Elite. She transferred to Westbrook to finish out her degree after a shoulder injury brought her own swimming career to a screeching halt. Oh, and she also happens to be the coach's daughter. While most of Elite is surprised to find out coach has a daughter, Rush is even more surprised to see his siren again. In the flesh.
The connection between Rush and Landry is still there and even though Rush wants to push Landry away, they reconnect. Oh boy, do they reconnect. The chemistry is well written in Wildcard, and the spice is niiiiice. Rush is a little domineering and a lot possessive, but he is also all about the consent and the safety checks.
But don't forget, this might be a college sports romance but it's one written by Cambria Hebert. So that means SUSPENSE. Rush's past comes back to haunt him and Landry is caught in the middle. I don't like to share major plot points so if you want the drama, you gotta read it yourself.
As always, Hebert has done a fantastic job of creating a family with her characters and plotlines.(This is why you need to read ALL OF THE BOOKS!!) The interactions between the characters, the humor and the unwavering support is something I think we all dream about having in our lives. And the attention to detail! Little bits of Rush we saw in WTF that flow right into Wildcard are *chef's kiss*. The consistency Hebert achieves from book to book is always on point.
I totally enjoyed Wildcard and am always excited to see what Cambria Hebert will treat us to next in the series.
Total 5 star read.
