Derek Alexander is an ex-Marine, ex-cop, and the top investigator in his field. Melissa Jones is a small-town girl trying to escape her troubled past.
When the two intersect in a bar in Arizona, their sexual chemistry is off the charts. But what is revealed during their "one week stand" only complicates matters.

Okay, so who doesn't love a book that starts off with HOT up-against-the-wall-of-a-bar sex!!! Melissa meets hotter than hottest Derek at a bar. Their eyes meet across the bar and the unthinkable happens for Melissa, he approaches her! After a few sexy, underlying comments and a drink, they make there way to a secluded area on a patio, TO GET IT ON!!!! Melissa promises to meet him in the bar again the next night but chickens out...what is her problem, she had a man grasping her butt and taking to the desert stars!!! How do you not go back for the moon??!!
"Let me show you the desert sky." "That sounds like it might be dangerous." He touches my arm. "I'll keep you safe."

Melissa has a dark past that is hinted as to why she and her friend, Elaine are at this hotel for a "spa" week. You will LOVE her witty, funny, and caring friend, Elaine just as much as Melissa! The two women are a hoot together and everyone needs a strong, do anything for you friend like Elaine. Even Elaine finds herself a hot man while at the hotel for the week.

"For once, I wanted to forget what happened last year. Let it go and be somebody else. I was out of town, in the desert, in a bar being hit on by a gorgeous stranger. Fate was giving me my chance."

"A million pornographic images flooded my brain of that nose nudging into my dark spaces, of that mouth kissing areas long-neglected. That beard scratching the insides of my thighs as I moaned and twisted in white sheets, threading my fingers in his silky hair."

After deciding that they couldn't stay away from each other, Melissa and Derek decide that they will have a week-long stand and then end it when they leave the hotel at the end of the week. No, strings attached, no feelings, no future...right...that always works out..NOT!! The two begin to have stronger feelings during the week together but Melissa fights it and is adamant that they cannot have a relationship after their week together. Derek tells her that he wants more after and gives her a floating heart necklace with the words "What I would give you. If you hadn't already stolen it. -D.A." to remember him by.

"What happened with Derek might be extended as part of me cutting ties, my declaration of freedom from the past....But more likely it was just a blip on the radar screen. An incredible distraction, that was now through."

Melissa goes home to an abusive soon to be ex husband to clear up loose ends and get her things. Sloan, her very wealthy and influential husband does everything can he can to scare her into staying. But Melissa finds all the reciepts from his call girls and unfortunatly the one thing she never wanted to find. An email from Sloan to Derek, hiring him to spy on Melissa! He knew who she was the entire time! Melissa is devestated and calls Elaine to come get her so she can move out. She goes to confront Derek and show him how abusive Sloan had been during their marriage.

"I should be crying. The little flicker of hope I'd held dearly all these days had been cruelly extinguished, and I was left shivering in the cold darkness alone."

"That's the part I don't understand. Why did you do that? Was it a little extra for you? Tap the wayward wife?"

Melissa moves back to her home town and tries to forget about Derek and build her career back up. She misses him but is too hurt to even think about talking to him. The shit really hits the fan when Sloan shows up to give his (ex) wife a going away present and it isn't the kind a women would enjoy! Derek had been tracking him and saves the day!! I really wish there had been more back story to Derek and his past. There was only a brief mention of his wife having died a few years ago but that was really the only glimpse we got.

"I wanted to tell you what was going on so much, but, well, I felt if there was a chance for your marriage, I should step aside and let you work it out. As much as I hated it, he'd found you first."

"Every day, I would stare out the windows for the longest time wondering where you were, what you were doing. If you were happy, if you made up with him. If you even thought about me."
Poor Derek..come here, I'll give you some love!!!

"One day soon, when you're feeling whole again, I'm going to ask you to marry me."
