Review of Being Kalli by Rebecca Berto

BEING KALLI
Rebecca Berto
Kalli Series Book 1
Rating: 4 Groupie Stars

At nineteen, Kalli Perkins has never been in love and doesn't ever intend to be. She has her issues handled. She's managed to keep the secret of what happened to her nine years ago from her mother, although her mother's usually high anyway and barely notices Kalli or her little brothers.

One night at a party, Kalli makes a bet with her friend, Nate, that could change everything. But she didn't count on him. Nate's very capable of satisfying her, not only under her clothes, but in her heart, too.

She just doesn't know it yet.
*** Recommended for mature readers due to explicit content. This book is published in Australian English and includes relative diction. ***

This book is definitely NOT a light hearted Romance. There are a lot of deep issues dealt with in this book. There is a love story, but the main focus of this book is overcoming your past and moving on to a better future. I really liked Kalli, the main character, faults and all. I really felt like the author did a great job of getting us to connect with all the characters and to become invested in their story. I was drawn in and had a hard time putting this book down.

Kalli is a little slutty when we first met her. Some of her "actions" make your jaw drop and think oh no she didn't!!!! At the age of ten Kalli was raped by her mother's then boyfriend. There are flash backs that are detailed about what happened to her. Because of what happened to her, she refuses to be alone with a guy and prefers public sexual acts. She never connects with the guy and is in it just for control and release. That is until things start to change between her and her long time friend Nate

Nate! I loved Nate. He was sweet and shy but also had a dirty side. He loves photography and ends up taking some pretty hot pictures of Kalli. He is a great friend and is there for Kalli no matter what. He also has a very forgiving heart. He has had a feelings off Kalli for a long time but has been afraid to act on them.

Kalli is also afraid of her feelings towards and tries to fight them. She makes a very bad decision that could cost her Nate. She also has to deal with a drug addicted mother and has to help take care of her twin brothers, who are so important to her. I loved how much Kalli cared for her brothers and was more of a mother to them the their own. Kalli also has a best friend named Scout. I loved Scout. She has her own issues and I'm hoping she gets her own book because I want to know more about her!

Over all I really enjoyed this book. This is a longer book, but there is a HEA and no cliff hanger. I would recommend this if you are looking for a serious book that has a lot of depth. I will warn this book is set in Australia and use some slang and there were parts where I had no idea what they were talking about!

Rebecca Berto writes stories about love and relationships. She gets a thrill when her readers are emotional reading her books, and gets even more of a kick when they tell her so. She's strangely imaginative, spends too much time on her computer, and is certifiably crazy when she works on her fiction.

Rebecca Berto lives in Melbourne, Australia with her boyfriend and their doggy.
